PioneerLegal is the first public-interest law initiative of its kind in Massachusetts and, to our knowledge, in New England, designed to challenge the status quo in policymaking and fight for positive change that affects the public interest in at least three policy areas:  economic freedom, government accountability and educational choice.

In partnership with legal professionals as well as leaders of business and community organizations, PioneerLegal leverages pro bono relationships with attorneys to:

  • Expand business growth and job creation by working to eliminate or reform unnecessary rules, regulations and fees;
  • Improve our democratic process through greater government transparency; and
  • Enhance the quality and scope of educational options available to students and their parents at all socio-economic levels.

JohnSivolella.Photo.8.13John Sivolella is Senior Fellow in Law and Policy at the Pioneer Institute.  He’s leading the development of PioneerLegal, the Institute’s public-interest law initiative.

In addition to his work with the Institute, John is on faculty in the Department of Political Science at Columbia University, where he earned a Ph.D.  There he teaches a seminar, Political and Legal Influences on Federal Government Agencies. 

John has also been on faculty at Columbia’s School of International and Political Affairs, where he taught The Politics of Policymaking in ‘Advanced’ Democracies, a core class in the M.P.A. program.  His research focuses on federal agencies, executive power, public law and federal courts.
