BOSTON – The concentration of businesses in the city of Brockton has risen steadily, but employment levels still haven’t returned to pre-Great Recession levels, according to Pioneer’s Brockton City Spotlight. City Spotlights is a new product developed by Pioneer Institute using 16 years of data from its MassEconomixTM and MassAnalysisTM databases.
“Good economic policy requires an understanding of what is happening in the real economy,” said Pioneer Executive Director Jim Stergios. “For too long state and local policymakers, as well as media professionals, have worked from data that’s been drawn from a variety of sources, defined differently, and held together with chewing gum and baling wire. We aim to fix that.”
Other significant Brockton findings include:
- The biggest employment sectors in 2020 are a) Healthcare and Social Assistance, b) Retail Trade, and c) Educational Services.
- The sectors with the greatest number of establishments (businesses, nonprofits and other institutions) in 2020 are (a) Health Care and Social Assistance, (b) Other Services, and (c) Retail Trade.
- The sectors with the greatest employment growth from 2004 to 2020 are (a) Arts, Entertainment, and Recreation (+143 percent); (b) Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services (+83 percent); and (c) Educational Services (+34 percent).
- The three sectors experiencing the biggest employment declines are: (a) Transportation and Warehousing (-69 percent), (b) Information (-38 percent), and (c) Manufacturing (-33 percent).
- From 2003 to 2008, the city’s public school enrollment declined, then increased through 2014, followed by further declines.
- Brockton has experienced a positive trend in graduation rate (up about 9% from 2006), and a decrease in the portion of students who drop out each year (down about 10% from 2006).
The City Spotlights are drawn from MassEconomixTM and MassAnalysisTM.
MassEconomixTM is Pioneer Institute’s database that uses local, regional, and state data on employment, business, and industry trends to provide users with high-quality, timely data.
MassAnalysisTM allows users to “benchmark” their communities with other districts in the state with a peer identifier tool. Read the 2021 Brockton City Spotlight Report to compare trends in Brockton to those in its closest peer communities.
