Home Policy Priorities Health Transparent Care

Transparent Care

Clear prices. Fair rules. Real competition in healthcare.

About Transparent Care

Across the U.S., patients face rising costs and high-deductible plans—and lack clear, upfront prices for medical care. In all industries, prices inform choice and competition; in healthcare, opaque pricing produces wide, arbitrary cost swings that leave families financially exposed. Despite federal and state efforts to improve transparency, lawsuits and political pressure have slowed progress, keeping patients and purchasers in the dark about treatment costs.

Drawing on deep experience in Massachusetts and Washington, D.C., PioneerHealth advances genuine price transparency, where patients know costs before receiving care and providers compete on value.

We believe public entities should set the rules of a fair market, not set prices; clear rules, not price controls. Government should encourage competition and consumer-driven reforms that expand affordable insurance options, telehealth, and the ability of clinicians to practice across state lines.

From 2012-22 the healthcare and social assistance sector has seen the smallest growth in average weekly wages of any large industry in Massachusetts. This potentially has dire consequences on the employment crisis that this industry already faces.

An Evaluation of 340B in Massachusetts

Despite the fact that the 340B Drug Pricing Program has expanded immensely in recent years, the amount of charity care that hospitals are providing has decreased. This points to several problems with the 340B program across the country and in Massachusetts, such as a lack of transparency and inaccessible care.
