From our man in Havana (the Education Intelligence Agency) comes an analysis of NEA’s financial disclosure report for 2008-09 fiscal. What did our EIA agent find?

The national union contributed almost $26 million to a wide variety of advocacy groups and charities. The total more than doubles the amount disbursed in the previous year… In this list, EIA has deliberately omitted spending such as media buys, or payments to pollsters or consultants that have no obvious ideological component… All of these were paid for with members’ dues money (the union’s federal PAC is a separate entity funded through voluntary means):

Of interest locally is the gift to FairTest, a national organization with a local affiliate that opposes testing; the Partnership for 21st Century Skills, which is pushing in my view weaker academic standards; and Coalition for Our Communities, a group that opposed the petition to roll back the income tax.

For those of you interested in the full extent of the NEA’s involvement in the fight against the tax rollback, feel free to peruse the list of people and organizations that gave to the Coalition for Our Communities effort during the entire period of its existence. (Thank you, SP.)
